Obsidian (SiO2) belongs to the vitreous group of minerals which are hard, glassy materials that have no cleavage planes or crystal structure. Vitreous minerals are usually transparent but may be translucent or opaque depending on their composition and grain size. Most vitreous minerals fracture with a conchoidal fracture (like glass). Obsidian has a Mohs hardness of 5-5 1/2 and a specific gravity of 2-3 . It occurs in two basic forms, rhyolite obsidian and basaltslickenside obsidians . The most common color varieties are black , brown , gray , green , white , red , orange , yellow , blue , pink, purple, and multicolored .
